Workshop Summary

The goal of this workshop is to take the audience from an awareness of assistive technology devices to the importance of services, implementation and follow-up for school-aged individuals with disabilities. The following are the participant learning objectives for the preconference workshop.

  • 1. understanding of assistive technology devices related to education, communication, vocation and mobility
  • 2. awareness of functional assessments in the area of assistive technology
  • 3. an ability to identify local, state and national resources supporting assistive technology
  • 4. knowledge of components necessary to design an assistive technology system such as, control interfaces, computer access devices and software
  • 5. knowledge of augmentative communication devices and software
  • 6. skills necessary for the coordination of activities of a school-based transdisciplinary team
  • 7. an ability to contribute to the development of appropriate assistive technology goals and objectives during the IEP team process
  • 8. knowledge and awareness of legal and ethical issues related to the provision of assistive technology services

This workshop will reference a guidebook entitled "Has Technology Been Considered? A Guide for IEP Teams.

The workshop format will include: multimedia presentations, video, simulations and discussion.
