Abstract:
This paper describes a touch panel controller with a micro computer for powered wheelchair. A prototype of the touch panel had 7 by 7 switches placed on it. An area of the touch switch was 7 by 7 cm. The center switch worked as neutral. Three switches in front of the center one worked for going straight ahead, three switches in back of it worked for going straight backward and three right/left switches worked for turning right/left. The other switches worked for combined movement. The more outside switch was pushed, the faster the powered wheelchair ran. This system had a smoothing procedure for changing the switch pushed. The movement of the powered wheelchair was changed linearly from a switch to switch pushed. An evaluation to compare to a joystick type powered wheelchair "Unicam Mouse" resulted that this prototype was a little worse than the joystick type. However the result was thought relatively good.
