Abstract:
This paper describes a new transferring system from a bed to a wheelchair. A bed, which had three parts (back part, lumber part and leg part) and was reclined, was developed. Each part consists of a series of rollers and a belt strained around the rollers. A wheelchair in this system has similar mechanisms to the bed. It changes the shape from wheelchair to even surface like a bed. After the wheelchair, which is not reclined, is set beside the bed, the both rollers are rotated by only one handle. So, the both belts move to side way, simultaneously a patient laid on the bed are transferred to on the wheelchair easily. When transferring, a mat on the belt of the bed moves down through a gap between the bed and the wheelchair. Another bed, which consists of nine parts, can roll over a patient on it. Rotating force of the handle was 5 kg which is enough low for older people to use it. It was found that electric powered mechanisms for rolling over a patient and reclining were needed.
