Abstract:
In this paper, an experience of using a REA Comfort Wheelchair produced by Scandinavian Mobility, Inc. is reported. This wheelchair is designed to support the user's seating and has both reclining and tilting functions. And it could be equipped with many options, such as, a headrest and armrests. In this report, the users are two persons with hemiplegia and have tendencies to fall on the paralyzed side. One is a sixty-six year old with Parkinson's disease. The other is seventy-five year old with hemiplegia caused by cerebral hemorrhage. Both have been trained in positioning themselves using a REA Comfort wheelchair for a month. As a result, they make a remarkable progress in positioning themselves. For example, their seating times increase. And the authors indicate that many European seating systems are installed in hospitals in Japan, and Japanese therapists don't have much knowledge of those seating systems.
