Abstract:
In this paper, a survey of wheelchair users' needs for chairs in the office is reported. Now wheelchair users are using wheelchairs in the office but some office desks have barriers. And so, the authors suggest that chairs should be developed to breach the barriers and assist them at their workspace. Both the concept of the development of the chairs and market researches are reported in this paper. The authors give three criteria that the chair must meet. The first criterion is that it should be adjustable to the user's own body and, of course, must have a feature that prevents pressure sores. The second is that it lets the user work in the office by himself and allows for ergonomic motions. The last is that it should have up-and-down and right-and-left capabilities in the office. In order to research the market, they interview six wheelchair users who work in a office. The authors' result is that their base concept is suitable to the users' needs. On the other hand, they indicate that some problems related to powered wheelchairs are still unsolved even now.
