INCIDENCE

'Incidence' has a very specific meaning that is different from 'Prevalence'.
Incidence: is the number of new cases arising in a given period of time in a population.
Prevalence: is the total number of cases in a population at a particular time.

Incidence

  • Depends on the cause of the condition
  • Since the incidence is smaller than the prevalence in most instances, a larger sample is required for a study
  • Difficult and costly to study, since it requires longitudinal follow up
  • Incidence study will help plan future strategies and differential risk in different groups

Prevalence

  • Depends on the course, interventions and death
  • Since the prevalence is larger than the incidence, a smaller sample is enough for a survey
  • Can be studied easily by a cross sectional survey of population
  • Prevalence survey will help plan present strategies and present requirement of intervention
