EVALUATION OF TRAINING COURSES

Key questions to be evaluated

  1. Whether participants have achieved course objectives.
  2. Whether participants have learned what they are supposed to learn.
  3. What unexpected positive outcomes have occurred that can be incorporated in the future courses.
  4. What are the courses strengths and weaknesses.
  5. Whether the job performance has improved after training.

Types of evaluations
During the course:
1. Reaction of the participants. (Do they like the course, what do they like about it, what do they dislike.)

Learning objectives are met.
Learning objectives are relevant.
Course content is realistic.
Training methods are suitable.
Facilitators are effective.
Training environment is adequate.
(Oral feed-back/written feed-back Open ended questions/ close ended questions.)

2. Learning. (What have they learned, have they learned what they are expected to learn.)

What do they know before training.
What do they know after training.
Is the knowledge what they are expected to know.
(Observation/reviewing data from simulated reports, plans, exercises and other documents)

After the course:

3. performance. (Have the new skills being applied, what attitudinal changes have occurred to them.)

(Performance evaluation is a feed-back from the supervisors at the work situation, usually after six months to one year after training) 4. Impact.(Has the training and application of the new skills improved the results of application.)

(Impact is usually evaluated when global evaluations are planned)

      REACTION LEARNING PERFORMANCE
How will we use the data ? To identify if the participants liked the course.To change if necessary. To identify if the skills were learned. To identify if the skills are being applied.
What data do we need ? Do they think they are meeting the objectives ?
Do they like the programme ?
Gaining skills during practices in the course. Applying the skills in the field work.
How should we collect the data ? Written feed-back.Oral feed-back. Observation.
Simulated exercises.
Supervisors reports.
When should we collect the data ? Beginning and the end of course. Throughout the course. six months to one year after the course.
