Dear Editor,

THE VIKLANG SANSKAR TIRTH

Viklang Sanskar Tirth was established in 1984 with the aim of opening new horizons for people with disabilities and their families, by initiating innovative programmes in the areas of education, training and rehabilitation for people with all types of disabilities. The organisation was started by a small group of professionals with considerable experience of working with disabled people, from the fields of medicine, social work, psychology, education and business. The main objectives of the organisation are 1) to work for the welfare of disabled persons by undertaking activities in the areas of prevention, treatment, education, training, rehabilitation and employment, 2) to promote co-operation among associations, institutions, establishments, organisations and individuals working for the welfare of disabled persons, 3) to organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and exhibitions on relevant topics in collaboration with local, national and international organisations, 4) to help disabled persons to become independent and live a meaningful life as equal members of their families and communities.

A Guidance and counselling centre was started last year which helped more than 55 people with disabilities. Most disabled persons and their families find it difficult to accept the permanent nature of the disability, and continue to seek a cure rather than accept and adapt appropriately. Many disabled persons who do not have a disability certificate are counselled to get one. Some clients have joined a long term educational programme which is conducted once a week. Most of the services of the centre are provided in the evenings, with prior appointments. Minimum fees are charged for the services. A new service that was started is the home bound programme, which currently serves a few clients and their families. Polio camps were regularly held in Ahmedabad. During the last year. It was found that a majority of persons disabled with polio did not require surgeries, but required counselling about alternate ways of dealing with and accepting the situation. Another major activity of the organisation is to conduct awareness programmes in schools of Ahmedabad. Approximately 350 students were interviewed last year to get information about disabled persons in their families and in their neighbourhood. All disabled persons identified this way are called to the centre for assessment and planning of interventions.
