Dear Editor,

Beijing-Haidian Hospital for Neurologically Disabled Children

The Hospital for Neurologically Disabled Children (HNDC) of Haidian is a branch of Xiyuan Hospital of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. HNDC was established to develop traditional Chinese medicine and combine it with western medicine to practice it in a hospital with Chinese characteristics.. In HNDC the simultaneous practice of these two streams of medicine have gone on for the last nine years.

When it was started, the hospital had only seven medical professionals, two portable acupuncture anaesthesia instruments, twelve single-storey houses, twelve beds and 30,000 Yuan in loans. Now it has grown into a medium-sized speciality hospital in paediatric neurology. The hospital is situated on a 4000 square metres area and has 120 beds. The out-patient service consists of a 200 square meters size waiting room and 30 consulting rooms, treatment rooms and 40 beds. It accommodates about 200 patients daily. There are more than 80 paramedical medical workers and other staff members working in this hospital along with 56 medical staff members.

Treatment techniques such as acupuncture, massage and functional exercises are used with devices such as laser, vital massage therapeutic instrument, automatic exercise bed etc. The common disorders treated are cerebral palsy, low intellectual development and epilepsy. In cases of cerebral palsy and low intellectual development, HNDC uses 'Yi Nao Plan', a drug developed by it, along with acupuncture, Vital massage therapeutic instrument, traditional Chinese laser self-blood treatment and optical photo self-blood treatment. In epileptic patients HNDC uses "Yi Nao Pian" and "Jing Tan Pian", which are drugs developed by it. Most cases of epilepsy attending the HNDC are resistant to other forms of treatment.

The combination of traditional Chinese medicine with western medicine is expected to improve the quality of medical treatment.
