EDITOR'S COMMENT

After the last issue of the journal, a substantial number of completed feedback questionnaires were returned to us, along with requests for the inclusion of additional readers in the mailing list. The publishers are in the process of scrutinising the feedback, eliminating names of non-readers to avoid wastage, and rationalising the mailing list to include only readers of the journal. The feedback questionnaire is included again with this issue, so that those who did not send it earlier can do so now.

The major changes introduced in response to the feedback are as follows. The glazed paper is now changed to matt paper which does not reflect light, and the print size is altered wherever possible, for better readability. Certain changes have been made in the format of the journal, such as giving the names of the authors under the titles of the articles, and introducing a new section called 'Brief Reports' to include preliminary and short reports. The feedback has identified two groups of readers, with one group expecting academic and theoretical knowledge from the journal, and the other group expressing the need for applied and practical material that is useful for training and interventions at the field level. Hence it has been decided to bring out a newsletter as an associate publication of the Journal, to deal with the applied aspects of community based rehabilitation. Both the publications will be mailed free of cost to readers who specifically request for them, and will be available on the same website that is sponsored by the Japanese Society for Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons, Japan. The sponsors and the publishers of the journal and the newsletter also plan to bring out few occasional publications on different aspects of community based rehabilitation, with contributions from different authors who have volunteered to do so. These occasional publications will be mailed free of cost to the readers who request for them.

Plans are being made for the long term sustainability of these publications. Action for Disability, the sponsor of the journal, has started a corpus fund in the UK, with the initial contributions from various benefactors. Other different avenues are being explored for continued funding of the journal, until the corpus fund becomes sufficient to support a substantial part of the funding requirement from its earnings. Readers from the developed countries who can afford to do so, are also requested to support the journal in a small way for the next five years, until the corpus fund can meet these needs. The journal will continue to be mailed free of cost to all readers who request for it, since most readers who are interested in community based rehabilitation are from the developing countries, and may not be in a position to pay for it.

The editorial team, the sponsors, the authors and the publishers hope that the journal will fulfil the urgent need for an academic publication dealing with non-institutional forms of rehabilitation from different parts of the world. It is a great pleasure for us to note that the journal is being quoted in a large number of documents all over the world. We hope that this trend will be continued and further enhanced in the coming years.

On the eve of 1999, the sponsors, the editorial team and the publishers convey their personal wishes to all the readers for the very best in the coming year !
