Application Guidance

The 12th Duskin Leadership Training in Japan; A Program for Persons with Disabilities in Asia and the Pacific (2010)

Ⅰ Training / Course

1 Objective

This program is intended for persons with disabilities in Asian and Pacific regions who have potential to be community leaders. To help achieve their goals, this program provides an opportunity for them to learn about welfare measures, policies and services for persons with disabilities in Japan and thus improve their knowledge and skills. It is sponsored by the Duskin AINOWA Foundation as one of the projects commemorating the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons (1993-2002)

9 Training Facilities

Facilities related to rehabilitation of persons with disabilities, educational institutions, organizations of/for persons with disabilities and voluntary organizations in Japan.

10 Main Characteristics of the Training Program

(1) The trainee decides the detailed content of his/her individual training program, and is allowed to carry out his/her own program according to his/her individual interests with a definite goal.
(2) In principle, the training is provided in Japanese language or Japanese sign language.
(3) An intensive Japanese language or Japanese sign language course to help trainees obtain communication skills in Japanese will be provided for the first three months after their arrival in Japan. Trainees will be able to exchange opinions and ideas actively with Japanese people by acquiring sufficient Japanese. Trainees take Japanese language proficiency test in December.
(4) Training program can be created in cooperation with the related facilities and organizations in the field of disabilities.
(5) Trainees can learn about the present situation in Japan regarding rehabilitation, welfare services and movements of/for persons with disabilities through observation and gaining hands-on experiences at the related facilities.
(6) Trainees can attend various conferences and seminars related to disability or rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in Japan.
(7) Trainees will be given the opportunity to have a home-stay with a Japanese family during New Year's holidays.
(8) Trainees can obtain the knowledge of the present situation on international cooperation through training and by meeting leaders with disabilities from different countries.
(9) Trainees can learn how to write project proposals and to make presentations.
(10) Trainees are required to submit weekly report and final report.

Ⅱ Application

11 Applicant Qualifications

(1) The applicant should be a person with disability who wishes to contribute to the community as a future leader.
(2) In principle, the applicant should be between 18 and 25 years of age at the time of Application deadline.
(3) Specific educational background or work experiences are not required.
(4) The applicant should undergo ten-month continuous training in Japan and should be able to adapt himself/herself to the Japanese way of life.
(5) The applicant should be able to communicate either in Japanese (or Japanese sign language) or in English (or International sign language).
(6) The applicant should be able to carry on the activities of daily life without assistance.
(7) The applicant should have his/her own training plan.
(8) The applicant should have a surety, who is a parent, brother or sister who is of age, or someone who is equivalent to the kin.
(9) The applicant should be ready to accept all risks in case of unforeseen incidents including accidents.

12 Guidelines in Preparing the Application Form

Applicants must send the Application Form by postal mail, international courier or Email attachment to the secretariat of the "Duskin Leadership Training in Japan". Applicants must be aware that “Application Form” will not be accepted through FAX. Only fully completed applications will be accepted. Application Forms are not returnable. Acknowledgement of receipt is not provided.

(1) Precautions in the preparation for Email attachment
 1) Application form must be sent as attachment file, include in the subject line: “Application for the 12th Duskin Leadership Training in Japan”. Body text must be blank.
 2) Your photo must be resized the same size of frame, and attached within the designated place. Do not send original picture data. File size should be less than 2MB, or it will be rejected.

(2) General precautions
 1) "Application Form" must be completed in English or Japanese. Be sure to type or write in block letters within the space given in each section and fill in the entire form without omission.
 2) Regarding Section 10, state your academic year and describe your major if you are a student. If you are employed, select your occupation and describe your position and your job.
 3) Regarding Section 11, write the exact name of the school that should be your final graduation and specific major (For example; I graduated from XYZ School.)
 4) Regarding Section 12, write the exact name of the workplace and year.
 5) Regarding Section 16, write a current detailed situation of your disability. Mention if you need some assistance in your daily life.
 6) Regarding Section 23, ensure that your surety can be directly contacted by the Secretariat. Be sure to write the full name, the contact address and telephone numbers of your surety.
 7) Applicants are generally expected to fill in the form by themselves. However, another person may fill in the form for an applicant who has difficulty in doing so. In such cases, this should be clearly stated in the Section 24 of the form.

13 Application Deadline

Application deadline of the 12th program is November 15, Sunday, 2009 (As indicated by the postmark on the envelope).

15 Selection Procedures and Notification of Acceptance

(1) The Executive Committee will select the candidates for the 12th Program.
(2) After going through all Application Forms, the potential candidates will be selected by the Executive Committee.
(3) The secretariat will directly contact each potential candidate and some members of the Executive Committee will interview him/her in his/her own country by the end of April 2010.
(4) The final decision will be made by the Executive Committee after interviewing the potential candidates. The Secretariat will officially inform all the successful candidates and the interviewed candidates.
(5) The successful candidates are to be selected by the end of April 2010 and all applicants will be informed of the result by post.
(6) If applicants do not hear or receive the results by the end of May 2010, applicants should contact the secretariat.

16 Expenses

(1) The sponsor will cover the following expenses of trainees in accordance with their individual study plans.
 1) Air fare for a round-trip ticket between an international (domestic) airport in the trainee's home country and in Japan.
 2) Miscellaneous expenses in the process of the documents such as the cost of obtaining a passport and visa.
 3) Costs of the training during the training program.
 4) Daily living allowance needed for accommodations and meals during the program.
 5) Eleven-month Comprehensive Insurance for Foreign Trainees.

(2) All personal expenses during the training program (expenses not mentioned above) will be borne by trainees themselves.
