United Nations ESCAP The Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities 1993 - 2002 Resource Materials

Forward

The UN ESCAP Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons will be concluded in 2002.

During the Decade, RNN (Regional NGO Network for the Promotion of A/P Decade), in cooperation with National NGOs in various countries and areas of the region, has organized Campaign Conferences to promote the Decade. The awareness of the Decade, however, is still low even in some signatory countries and areas of the region, while some have just recently signed the proclamation on the Full Participation and Equality of the People with Disabilities in the Asian and Pacific Region.

This year the annual RNN Campaign Conference will be held in Japan together with the Rehabilitation International Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific as International Forum to Mark the End Year of the Decade, where the review of the achievement during the Decade and issues to be tackled after the Decade within the new frame work will be discussed.

This booklet is published as resource materials to introduce the 107 targets for the implementation of the agenda for action for the Decade, which was endorsed by the UN ESCAP, as well as the recent report of the ESCAP concerning the Decade.

We hope the booklet will be useful for promotional activities of the Decade and beyond.
