Background information

  • Vietnam is a disaster-prone country:
    • From 2000 to 2013: 5.123 deaths; 8,134 injuries; 686 missing; 6,257,239 collapsed, damaged and swept away houses
    • Total loss (shortfalls in rice and other agricultural products): 153,740 billion VND (7,321 million USD) (National Steering Committee of Flood and Storm Prevention and Control (NSCFSP))
  • Vietnamese government ratified the project "Public Awareness Raising and Community-based Disaster Risk Management" on 13.07.2009.
  • Objective: by 2020, 70% of the villagers living in disaster-prone areas have gained the necessary knowledge and skills on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
  • Implemented over a period of 12 years (2009-2020) in overall 6.000 disaster-prone communes throughout Vietnam.
