Abstract

Firstly my presentation focuses on DAISY implementation in Japan. DAISY implementation in Japan was launched with the initiative of Hiroshi Kawamura who is one of founders of the DAISY Consortium. He was very actively working to disseminate it widely through the activities of the Japanese Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (JSRPD). As a result of it, many audio-based DAISY books are being produced and lent on CD-ROM to users with visual impairments at libraries for the blind now.

Next focus is two DAISY authoring tools which JSRPD has developed. One is called “MyStudio PC” which can be used to create NCC only. This software is fully self-voicing and does not require an external synthesizer. The software is very easy to learn and operate since it has been developed for persons with visual impairments to use it.

Another is called “Sigtuna DAR3” which can be used to create NCC-only and full text/audio DAISY 2.02 Books. Scripts for Jaws for Windows are available. It requires external synthesizer. The user has the ability to create, edit, and/or remove NCC headings and pages during the recording process (when in "TOC-only mode").

These above tools are available to DAISY Consortium members and non-profit organizations in developing countries. In order to obtain these tools you are asked contact Information Center of JSRPD and the contact e-mail address is daisy_c@dinf.ne.jp.

Lastly my presentation focuses our present activities for disseminating DAISY with text, audio and image (it is called DAISY multimedia) as the effective information technology for people with cognitive, intellectual, or learning disabilities including dyslexia. Our initiative on DAISY multimedia publications including easy to read books for persons with intellectual disabilities is also introduced.
