Abstract

The purpose of this survey is to investigate the desires of the elderly in rela-tion to work and their satisfaction with the lives in retirement. According to our research (Mori,Hirayarna, 1993) many workers reemployed after retire-ment were still quite unprepared. It is neccessary to find ways to entice the eld-erly to participate in social activities and mutually support.
This study was conducted by mailing questioneaires consisting of 27 items to 1000 elderly people (replies, 50%).
Our Major findings were as follows:
Almost all respodents over 70 indicated they had wanted to continue work-ing for longer. Work itself had became their only satisfaction in life.
Many respondents participate in the "voluntary care deposit system" with the intention of drawing upon their "credit" when they live alone in the future.
More specific assessment of the needs of the elderly individually are re-quired, social welfare services for the elderly should be somewhat expanded in our community.
