Activities in disaster-affected areas

JDF activities in disaster-affected areas with three "Support Centers"

Miyagi Support Center

Established on March 18, 2011 (Sendai City, etc.)

  • Collaboration with disability organizations and related bodies in Miyagi Prefecture
  • Holding “information exchange sessions” (periodically held sessions among organizations who provide support to persons with disabilities in Miyagi Prefecture and the municipal governments)
  • Identification of needs and support for persons with disabilities, research and support for disability support facilities, support activities in collaboration with municipal governments and public health centers, etc.
  • Sending 817 support personnel from disability related organizations all over Japan (from March to December 2011)
  • Establishment of “JDF Miyagi” on March 9, 2012. It consists of disability related organizations in Miyagi Prefecture with which JDF has worked for the support of persons with disabilities. Activities of Miyagi Support Center are now done by JDF Miyagi.

Support Center Fukushima

Established on April 6, 2011 (Koriyama City)

  • It consists of 22 disability organizations and related bodies in Fukushima Prefecture (As of July 2012)
  • Fact-finding survey on persons with disabilities in Minamisoma City (Conducted from April to June 2011. With personal information on persons with disabilities disclosed by the City, JDF conducted a door-to-door survey in order to find out whereabouts of persons with disabilities and their needs for support.)
  • Project to create job opportunities through the radioactive decontamination using plants (sunflowers and their seeds), production and distribution of metal badges, etc.
  • Seminar on the compensation for nuclear damage in simple, clear terms to disabled persons, jointly organized by the Japan Federation of Bar Associations and the Fukushima Bar Association.
  • Research to identify needs of persons with disabilities in evacuation facilities, etc., consultation support for persons with disabilities, support for disability support facilities, setting up social networking salons, etc.

Iwate Support Center

Iwate Headquarters est. on Sept 22, 2011 (Morioka City)

Iwate Support Center est. on Apr 17, 2012 (Rikuzentakata City)

  • Collaboration with related organizations including a joint support project team of disability related organizations in Iwate Prefecture
  • Support activities for mobility and daily living of persons with disabilities living in Rikuzentakata City
  • Fact-finding survey on persons with disabilities living in Rikuzentakata City (With personal information disclosed by the City, JDF is currently conducting a door-to-door survey on persons with disabilities to find their needs for support.)
