Beginning with the Beveridge Report in 1941, Japan has looked to social security system of the UK as a model. Also in recent years, the ideas of the Third Way and social inclusion as promoted by the government of Mr. Tony Blair have influenced social welfare policy in Japan. The Japanese Committee of Japan/UK Research and Development Organization for Ageing, Disability and Technology was founded in 1999 to pursue joint efforts between the UK and Japan and has been regularly holding meetings to exchange information with experts from the UK. This year we are holding a seminar to discuss measures for persons with disabilities as a focal issue, with the aim of developing policies to benefit them in Japan and the UK.
