[MLIT/Kawasaki City] Electrified Vehicles to Evacuation Centers in a Disaster - A Demonstration Using Distributed Vehicles

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT)  demonstrated the use of electrified vehicles-dispatch exercises in Kawasaki City on 26 November 2021. The purpose of the exercise was to see if electrified vehicles could be dispatched to evacuation centers and other locations to serve as a mobile power source in a power outage due to a typhoon, earthquake, or other disaster.

Electrified vehicles include battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles, and hybrid electric vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with 100V power outlets, which can be used to charge cell phones and other devices at evacuation centers.

The MLIT has been implementing the Project to Support Electric Power Supply with Electrified Vehicles at Evacuation Shelters, and such, to promote electrified vehicles. This fiscal year, the MLIT has demonstrated electrified vehicles-dispatch exercises to evacuation centers to identify issues related to the use of electrified vehicles in a disaster situation and plan to spread electrified vehicles to each local government. Several local governments, automobile manufacturers, and car dealers have collaborated on the project.

This time, the MLIT conducted the exercise collaborating with Kawasaki City, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, and East Mitsubishi Motor Sales Group.
