[MIC] Population and Other Basic Data in the 2020 Census Released

On 30 November 2021, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) released the population and other basic data results of the 2020 National Census. Below is the summary of the results:

  • The population of Japan is 126,146,000 (as of 1 October 2020).
  • The number of males is 61.35 million, and the number of females is 64.797 million.
  • There was a 0.7% decrease from 2015. The average annual decline is 0.15%.
  • The population increased in 8 prefectures, including Tokyo, Kanagawa and Saitama, and decreased in 39 prefectures.
  • By prefecture, the most populous is Tokyo (14,048,000).
  • The population of the Tokyo metropolitan area (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba prefectures) is 36,913,000, accounting for about 30% (29.3%) of the national total.
  • Of the 1,719 municipalities in Japan, 1,419 (82.5%) experienced a decrease in population.
  • The number of persons per household for general households is 2.21, continuing the decline from the 2015 census.
  • The ratio of people aged 65 and over to the total population increased from 26.6% to 28.6%.
  • The percentage of the population under 15 years old is the lowest in the world, and the percentage of the population over 65 years old is the highest in the world.
  • Japanese population: 123,399,000 (down 1.4% from 2015, annual average down 0.29%)
  • Non-Japanese population: 2,747,000 (43.6% increase from 2015, 7.51% increase on average per year)
