Brief Profile
Professor Mak obtained his B. Sc. with Highest Honours in Engineering Mechanics with a minor in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1976. He completed his M. Sc. in 1989 and Ph. D. in 1980 in Biomechanics at the Technological Institute of Northwestern University and the affiliated Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. After spending three years of postdoctoral fellowship in Tissues Biomechanics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, Professor Mak took up an Assistant Professorship in Bioengineering and Orthopedics Research at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1988 Professor Mak joined the Jockey Club Rehabilitation Engineering Centre of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as the Centre's Principal Project Engineer. He was promoted to full professorship in 1995. Among his many responsibilities in teaching and research in areas of prosthetics and orthotics and biomedical engineering, Professor Mak serves as the program coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Musculoskeletal Bioengineering and Rehabilitation Technology. Professor Mak assumed the Chair of Rehabilitation Engineering and the Head of the Centre in 1997. Professor Mak was the founding course leader of the B. Sc.(Hons) Program in Prosthetics and Orthotics - the first such degree program in Asia. Professor Mak is active as a reviewer for many scientific journals as well as in many other professional societies like ISPO, RI-International Commission of Technology & Accessibility, IEEE-Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, etc. His research interests are in seating biomechanics, peripheral joint rehabilitation, prosthetic and orthotic bioengineering, fracture rehabilitation, tissue engineering, and biomaterials. Professor Mak has contributed more than 135 peer reviewed publications to the community.
