2007年3月、全盲、弱視、ディスレクシアの児童、およびその家族と教師ら250人が、イギリス議会に対し、アクセシブルなフォーマットによる教科書がないことを抗議しロビー活動を展開するために、ウェストミンスターを訪れた。それから2年後の現在、学校の状況はほとんど何も変わっていない。この講演でリチャード・オーム氏は、イギリスにおける学習者支援の現状を述べ、制度の改善に向けたRNIBの取り組みを紹介する。また、教育省から資金援助を受け、試験的に行われている重要な新サービスについて詳しく説明し、すべてのデジタル学習教材に明確な標準規格を設けることの重要性を強調する。さらに、出版社との共通の理解を築くことの重要性、視覚障害者団体とディスレクシア団体の間での強力な連携の重要性についても語るとともに、親や教師、政策決定 者のきわめて重要な役割を強調する。

“In March 2007 250 blind, partially sighted and dyslexic children, their families and teachers travelled to Westminster to the lobby of Parliament, protesting the lack of textbooks in accessible formats. Two years on, the situation in schools is largely unchanged. In this session, Richard Orme will describe the current arrangements for supporting learners in the UK, and RNIB's efforts to bring about a better system. He will provide details of a major new pilot service that is being funded by the Department of Education, and underline the importance of clear standards for all digital learning resources. He will describe the importance of building a shared understanding with publishers; the importance of strong collaboration between blindness and dyslexia organisations; and emphasise the essential role of parents, teachers and policy makers.”
