Next steps
・A nation wide needs survey of students with disabilities who require DAISY Multimedia Textbooks will be conducted in
September by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
・The needs survey will find more than 1% of students in the regular class requires DAISY multimedia textbooks.
・Based on the survey result, the Ministry will be requested to call an expert group to formulate a consensus on
the Accessible EPUB Specifications for Japanese Textbooks.
・Inclusion of sign language and other motion pictures in the specifications will be discussed seriously.
・As soon as the consensus on the specifications is formulated, textbook publishers will be urged to publish
Accessible EPUB version too.
・Current DAISY multimedia textbooks producers will support textbooks publishers to meet the mandate to publish
Accessible EPUB version.
・The EPUB Accessibility initiative of the DAISY Consortium and IDPF will directly contribute to the consensus
development.
・The Japan DAISY Consortium will encourage the Ministry and textbook publishers to publish the Accessible EPUB version within 2 years from now.
