THE ROLE OF MEDICAL REHABILITATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF TOURISM FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY (TPwD)

概要

One of the major phenomena in the new millennium is the booming of tourism industries. In the year of 2000 it is estimated that international tourist arrivals were about 673 million. By 2020, the World Tourism Organization (WTO) projects that there will be about 1,6 billion international tourist arrivals worldwide. The tourists will spend over US$ 2 trillion. Asia Pacific region will be the second preferred tourist destination (10%) after Europe (14%). On top of those figures, there is a big number of domestic tourists.

People with Disability as a part of the general population should take part in this phenomenon. On 24 - 28 September 2000 the Asia Pacific Conference on Tourism for People with Disability (APTPwD) was held in Bali. The result of the conference is Bali Recommendation on Promotion of Accessible Tourism and Declaration on Barrier Free Tourism for People with Disability. Those documents could be used as guidelines for the development of tourism for People with Disability in the region.

This paper will discuss about the involvement of the stakeholders for the development of TPwD especially professionals in medical rehabilitation.
