LETTERS TO EDITOR

Dear Editor,

DISABLED PEOPLE'S ORGANISATIONS AND CBR IN AFRICA

I would like to add to the information given in the letter of Tambo Camara from Mauritania which appeared in Vol. 9, No 1 of the Asia Pacific Disability Rehabilitation Journal. I agree that people with disabilities (PWDs) should play a vital role in CBR. I have been involved during the past year in training PWDs to be CBR workers. The programmes have been jointly organised by the district disabled persons' union and Action on Disability and Development (ADD). ADD has been providing the funding. I have been writing the curricula and facilitating the training. Thus far abut 20 PWDs from two districts have undergone 5 weeks of a 6 week training course covering identification, referral, home treatment and repairing/making devices. The PWDs involved are strictly volunteers, giving of their time to help their fellow PWDs to improve their lives. Emphasis is put on medical rehabilitation, but also on social integration, schooling, work, and other aspects of community participation. I have been impressed by the degree of enthusiasm shown by the PWDs. I am sure that during the coming years, they will work hard to implement the CBR programme. I have also been involved in training in other CBR programmes here in Uganda, where able bodied people were the CBR workers. Some of these people have been working for the government, and others for NG0s, but all were paid salaries. The level of dedication of these people does not match that of the PWDs.
