Maslach Burnout Inventory - Analysis

1.Emotional exhaustion 2.Depersonalisation 3.Personal accomplishment The MBI consists of the following three subscales:

1.Emotional Exhaustion 2.Depersonalisation 3.Personal Accomplishment

Please copy response from page 1 into the three columns on the left. For analysis, add up the scores per scale, i.e.9 scores for emotional exhaustion (column1), 5 scores for depersonalisation(column2) and 8 scores for personal accomplishment(column3).

There are different norms for different professional groups. To facilitate analysis, cut-off values from a study by Maslach & Jackson (1996) are listed for comparison.

For emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, results on each scale can fall in a
  • lower third - no or low burnout
  • middle third - moderate burnout
  • upper third - very high burnout
  • For personal accomplishment, the scoring is reversed, i.e
  • lower third - very high burnout
  • middle third - moderate burnout
  • upper third - excellent personal accomplishment, no burnout
