[MEXT] First Report of Study Council on the Future of Digital Textbooks Published

On June 8th, 2021, the Study Council on the Future of Digital Textbooks published its first report. The Council was established on June 11th, 2020, with the aim of conducting a specialized study on the promotion of digital textbooks and teaching materials in a learning environment of “one student, one tablet”, with a view to the GIGA (Global and Innovation Gateway for All) School concept. The report was compiled after 11 meetings, and the table of contents is as follows.

In relation to children with disabilities, "Consideration for students with disabilities" is included in the section on "Necessary measures for the full-scale introduction of digital textbooks". It says "In the case of pupils with special needs, confusion may arise due to different operation methods for different subjects, so it is desirable to standardize the operation methods to a certain extent.” "In the future, it is expected that all functions of digital textbooks will be universally designed so that they can be used regardless of disabilities".
