[MEXT] Interim Report on School Facilities for a New Era of Learning

On 20 August 2021, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) published an interim report entitled School Facilities for a New Era of Learning. The report was prepared after six discussions by the sub-committee to study school facilities for a new era under the Conference of Collaborators for the Study on the State of School Facilities established on 27 January 2021.

The sub-committee discussed how school facilities should be in a new era to enhance individual and collaborative learning in an integrated manner under a “one student, one tablet” environment.

The report, subtitled "Schools for the Future: Reviewing the Value of Real Space in a 'future-oriented' manner and Creating All School Facilities as Spaces for Learning." The report outlines the following five directions for school facilities to realize learning in the new era from the 'future-oriented' perspective.

  • Learning: Realizing learning environments most appropriate for individuals and collaborative learning opportunities
  • Life: Realizing a healthy learning and living space that takes into account new lifestyles
  • Co-creation: Realizing a space for co-creation in which we can work together with the local community and society
  • Safety: Realizing a safe and secure educational environment that protects children's lives
  • Environment: Realizing a sustainable educational environment that contributes to the realization of a decarbonized society

As to children with disabilities, the report covers the development of an inclusive education system and reasonable accommodation for students with diverse educational needs.
