[MLIT] App to Support Barrier-free Access around Paralympic Games Venues

On 19 August 2021, the Japan Business Council for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games started distributing the Japan Walk Guide, a web app that provides barrier-free route information. This smartphone app displays barrier-free routes for wheelchair users and also includes:

  • Information on steps and inclines along the way.
  • Congestion at stations.
  • The location of multi-functional toilets.

The application, developed by NTT Laboratories, makes use of open data and standardization of accessible information by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). According to the MLIT and the Business Council of Japan, these data on the area around the competition venues would enable people from all walks of life, including wheelchair users and the elderly, to visit the venues without stress and with peace of mind.

The app was available until 5 September 2021 during the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
