[MEXT] Survey on Problematic Behavior, Chronic School Absences and Other Issues Relating to Student Guidance and Counseling (Results already published)

On 13 October 2021, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) published the results of the FY 2020 Survey on Problematic Behavior, Chronic School Absences, and Other Issues Relating to Student Guidance and Counseling.

This survey is carried out every year in accordance with the Statistics Act and compiles information on violent behavior, bullying, suspension of attendance, prolonged absences, the number of drop-outs, suicides, and educational counseling at elementary, lower, and upper level secondary schools.

Of these, schools for special needs education were also surveyed for bullying, revealing that the number of recognized cases in those schools in FY 2020 was 2,263 (as compared with 3,075 cases last year). The results showed that the number of schools where bullying occurred was 465 out of 1,147.
