[MHLW] Events Held Nationwide Commemorating Developmental Disabilities Awareness Week

The 62nd United Nations General Assembly resolution (A/RES/62/139) adopted on December 18, 2007, designated April 2 of each year as World Autism Awareness Day. In accordance with this resolution, since 2012, awareness-raising activities to deepen the understanding of persons living with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities have been conducted on April 2 on a global scale.

In Japan, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) has designated April 2-8 as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Week. In line with it, educational activities to boost the understanding of autism and other developmental disabilities have been conducted.

This year, "World Autism Awareness Day ONLINE 2022 – Brilliant People, Illuminating People -" was organized by the World Autism Awareness Day Japan Executive Committee, sponsored by the MHLW, and the Autism Society of Japan, which featured the Tokyo Tower blue lighting, awareness-raising events, and the transmission of educational videos. In addition, an exhibit of artwork by people with autism and developmental disabilities was also held.

Furthermore, private companies, organizations, and local governments held various events.
