[MLIT] Study Meeting Held to Develop Guidelines for the Proper Use of Parking Spaces for Wheelchair Users

On September 14, 2022, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) held the first "meeting to consider the development of guidelines for the proper use of parking spaces for wheelchair users."

In view of the fact that there are situations where people who need parking spaces for wheelchair users are unable to use them because they are parked by people who do not need those spaces in the first place, in 2021, the former "study group on the modality of the wheelchair-user parking spaces" was set up to explore the appropriate use of parking spaces for wheelchair users. The study group discussed those parking spaces' hardware and software aspects and compiled an interim report in March 2022.

Based on this interim report, the MLIT is accelerating hardware development. In addition, on the software side, the MLIT is also preparing guidelines on the need to consider measures to promote proper use based on a range of user needs. Specifically, the guidelines are envisioned to clarify who is eligible to use wheelchair-user parking spaces, to provide a unified approach to system operation, and to publicize measures to secure a variety of parking spaces and prevent improper parking.

The study group is scheduled to meet twice, with the second meeting to be held between December and January to finalize the guidelines.
