[MLIT] Follow-up Conference Held on Barrier-Free Building Design Standards

On October 21, 2022, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) held the third "Follow-up Conference on Architectural Design Standards for the Smooth Mobility of Older Persons and Persons with Disabilities."

The conference was established on October 1, 2021, to share information and exchange opinions with academic experts and related organizations to continuously check and improve the "Architectural Design Standards for the Smooth Mobility of Older Persons and Persons with Disabilities," which are guidelines for barrier-free buildings.

The MLIT plans to hold the conference about twice a year, with the second conference on February 18, 2022, and the third one this time. The theme of this year's conference was to share information on barrier-free initiatives by businesses, related ministries and agencies, as well as best practices. The following materials were provided:

  • Reference 1: List of members
  • Reference 2: Outline of the follow-up conference and main opinions at the previous meeting
  • Reference 3: Efforts by each organization for the creation of barrier-free buildings after the revision of Building Design Standards
  • Reference 3-1:  Trend of local governments in light of the revision of the Architectural Design Standards
  • Reference 3-2:  The status of public awareness and dissemination efforts by concerned organizations
  • Reference 4: Inspection and technical advice system for specified facilities (Hyogo Prefecture)
  • Reference 5: Initiatives for Barrier-Free Buildings at Relevant Ministries and Agencies
  • Reference 5-1:  Initiatives to make schools barrier-free (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology)
  • Reference 5-2:  A project to promote universal design in sports facilities (Sports Agency)
  • Reference 5- 3: Initiatives for the proper use of parking facilities in favor of wheelchair users (Policy Bureau, MLIT)
  • Reference 6: Future Direction of Building Design Standards (Tentative)
