[MHLW] Release of Summary of 2021 Survey Results on Social Welfare Facilities

On December 26, 2022, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) released a summary of the 2021 Survey Results of Social Welfare Facilities.

This survey aims to ascertain the number of social welfare facilities nationwide, the situation of residents and workers engaged in social welfare, and to provide underlying data for promoting social welfare administration.

The main points of the survey results are as follows:

1. Status of Facilities

  • The number of major facilities
  • Daycares, etc. (Note 1):  29,995 facilities (up 521 facilities [+1.8%] from the previous year)
  • Fee-based senior care home (other than assisted living residences): 16,724 (up 768 [+4.8%] from the previous year)
  • The number of employees (Note 2)
  • Daycares, etc. (Note 1): 384,371 childcare workers, 120,583 childcare teachers

2. Status of Welfare Service-Providing Offices for Persons with Disabilities and Daycare Support for Children with Disabilities

  • The number of major facilities
  • Facilities for in-home care services: 24,462 (up 721 [+3.0%] from the previous year)

After-school daycare service facilities: 17,372 (an increase of 1,853 [+11.9%] from a year earlier)

  • The number of employees (Note 2)
  • In-home care facilities: 130,746 persons
  • After-school daycare service facilities: 92,455 persons

Note 1: Daycares, etc., are certified centers for early childhood education and care, nursery-type certified child care centers, and daycare centers.

Note 2: Number of full-time equivalent employees.
