[MOJ] Signing Ceremony Held for Partnership Agreement on the Model Project for the Treatment and Support of Inmates with Intellectual Disabilities in Nagasaki Prison

On January 16, 2023, a signing ceremony for the "Partnership Agreement to Verify the Effectiveness of the Model Project for the Treatment and Support of Inmates with Intellectual Disabilities in Nagasaki Prison" was held by Nihon Fukushi University and the Correctional Bureau of the Ministry of Justice in Nagasaki Prison. At the same time, Nagasaki Prefecture, Isahaya City, and Nagasaki Prison also concluded a regional cooperation agreement to support the inmates.

According to a special survey reported by the Correctional Bureau of the Ministry of Justice in FY2020, there are 1,345 inmates with intellectual disabilities nationwide who have a short recidivism period and need welfare support. In light of this, Nagasaki Prison has established a "Social Reintegration Support Section" for the first time as a penal facility, and has been implementing a model project for the treatment and support of inmates with intellectual disabilities since October 2022.

Under the model project, approximately 50 people from prisons in each prefecture in Kyushu will be detained in Nagasaki Prison and assisted in their reintegration into society through vocational training and the acquisition of a handbook certifying them as persons with intellectual disabilities. Nanko Airinkai, a social welfare corporation, is entrusted with the implementation of the project.

A preview of Nagasaki Prison was held in conjunction with this agreement signing ceremony.
