[CAO] Publication of Public Opinion Survey Results (Summary) on Persons with Disabilities

On February 21, 2023, the Cabinet Office released a summary version of public opinion survey results on persons with disabilities (Survey of November 2022).

The purpose of the survey is to ascertain the public's awareness of disabilities and persons with disabilities and to serve as a reference for future policies. The survey has been conducted approximately every five years since 1987, and this is the eighth time since its outset.

he survey targets 3,000 Japanese nationals nationwide aged 18 or older, with 1,765 valid responses (58.8% valid response rate).

The survey period was from November 10 to December 18, 2022, and the survey method was by mail.

Some of the survey results that might be interesting are as follows:

・Awareness of the "Act to Eliminate Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities"
 Know about it (subtotal) 24.0 %

・Awareness of symbols related to support for persons with disabilities
 A wheelchair, an international symbol for persons with disabilities 95.6 %
 The four-leaf clover symbol for the physically disabled 73.4 %

・What do you think is appropriate to describe "disability"?
All three compound words below use 障, meaning "hindrance," followed by a different letter(s) that sounds Gai.
障害: "hindrance" and "undermining" - 29.5%
障碍: "hindrance" and older character meaning "obstacles" - 3.0%
障がい: "hindrance" and “gai” in Hiragana - 39.8%
Any of these: 26.1%
