The Federal and state judicial systems are constructed like a pyramid. Entry-level courts are trial courts:
witnesses called
evidence presented
fact-finder (judge or jury) called upon to decide issues of fact based on law

At top of pyramid is court of last resort:
State Supreme Court at state level
U.S. Supreme Court at federal level

In most states and at federal level there is also a mid-level court of appeals.
