[Cabinet Office] ”Act to Eliminate Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities” Revised

On May 28th, 2021, the House of Councillors unanimously passed and enacted the "Act to Partially Revise the Act to Eliminate Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities".

The revisions to the Act include the following three points:

  • The necessary and reasonable accommodation provided by private business operators became mandatory (Article 14)
  • Cooperation among administrative agencies was strengthened (Article 3)

The national and local governments must take the measures necessary to eliminate discrimination against persons with disabilities through mutual cooperation and appropriate sharing of roles.

  • Support measures to eliminate discrimination against persons with disabilities were strengthened (Articles 6 and 16)

Local governments shall endeavor to collect, organize, and provide information on discrimination against persons with disabilities and make efforts to eliminate it in the community.

The law will come into force on a date specified by a Cabinet Order within a period not exceeding three years from the date of promulgation. The law can be found on the website below (Japanese only).
