[Guide Dog] Numbers of Refusals to Accept People Accompanied by Guide Dogs in 2020

On 17th May 2021, the Japan Guide Dog Association (President: Yukihiko Inoue) announced the numbers of consultations regarding refusals to accept people accompanied by guide dogs in the 2020 fiscal year. The Association publishes such figures annually. The results for 2020 show that there were 34 cases that were difficult to resolve by the individuals and in which the Association intervened. The breakdown of refusals by industry is as follows.

In 17 cases (50%), the reason for the refusals was that employees were not made aware of their obligations to accept guide dogs, and in 12 cases (35%), the reason was that the owners were not aware of their obligations. In addition, the results of interviews with 227 guide dog users are as follows:

- 14 people were refused admission or support due to COVID-19 precautions

- 93 people were refused admission or support because they were accompanied by a guide dog (41%)
