How to create accessible multimedia manual for tsunami preparedness
-Through the practice at Urakawa Bethel's House-

1. Introduction

Urakawa Bethel's House is a self-help group of persons with psycho-social disabilities such as schizophrenia. It is located in Urakawa, Japan.

Urakawa Bethel's House owns its new building at low altitude near seashore. Persons with severe symptoms live there. It is crucial for them to prepare for the tsunami to survive and keep quality of life; feeling safe and secured.

An easy to understand tsunami evacuation manual has been developed.

2. Needs to be met

Through "self-analysis researches", a Bethel's house member with schizophrenia has identified the following tendencies;

  • Getting tired easily
  • Difficulty to keep concentration
  • Feeling isolated and lonely
  • Getting addicted easily
  • Misunderstanding or being confused easily

3. Ensuring accessibility

The following points have been taken into account;

  • Right to the point with short sentence
  • With easy and understandable sentences
  • With familiar items, such as photos with familiar faces and places to the members
  • With clear instruction on how to make themselves safe and secured

4. How to create manuals

  1. Prepare the tsunami preparedness manual.
  2. Specify the parts to be modified.
  3. Develop a scenario.
    Go to the site and check the evacuation process.

  4. Take photos of each point according to the evacuation route.
  5. Edit a manual -> See "How to edit a DAISY manual".
