On August 28, 2024, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) released the preliminary results of the 2024 Basic School Survey.
This survey has been conducted annually since the fiscal year of 1948 to clarify basic information about the necessity for school education administration.
The release is a compilation of the preliminary data on major items.
1. Survey Contents
- (1) Survey date: As of May 1, 2024
- (2) Survey subjects: kindergartens, integrated nursery-kindergarten certified child education centers, elementary schools, junior high schools, compulsory education schools, high schools, secondary schools, special needs schools, universities, junior colleges, technical colleges, specialized training colleges, various other schools, and the municipal board of education.
2. Publicized Information
- (1) Publicized items: Number of schools, number of classes, number of students and teachers by school type
(2) Publication method: Posted on “e-Stat” the official government statistics portal
3. Key Results for Primary and Secondary Educational Institutions, Specialized Training Colleges, and Various Schools
<Number of students>
- ・Kindergartens: 758,000, a decrease of 84,000 from the previous year.
・Integrated nursery-kindergarten certified child education centers: 862,000, an increase of 19,000 from the previous year, the highest number ever.
・Elementary schools: 5,942,000, a decrease of 108,000 from the previous year, the lowest number ever.
・Junior high schools: 3,141,000, a decrease of 36,000 from the previous year, the lowest number ever.
・Compulsory education schools: 80,000, an increase of 3,800 from the previous year, the highest number ever.
・High schools: 2,907,000, a decrease of 12,000 from the previous year.
・Secondary schools: 35,000, an increase of 700 from the previous year, the highest number ever.
・Special needs schools: 155,000, an increase of 3,800 from the previous year, the highest number ever.
・Specialized training colleges: 610,000, an increase of 2,000 from the previous year.
- Of these, the higher-level courses: 33,000, a decrease of 400 from the previous year.
・Various schools: 108,000, a decrease of 500 from the previous year.
<Number of students>
- ・The percentage of female teachers in total:
- – Junior high schools: 44.8% (an increase of 0.2 percentage points from the previous year).
- – High schools: 33.8% (an increase of 0.4 percentage points from the previous year).
- – Special needs schools: 62.9% (an increase of 0.1 percentage pointsfrom the previous year).
These are the highest percentages recorded for each category.
The final results for all survey items are scheduled to be released in December of this year.
